PHILADELPHIA (4/20/04) - Saint Joseph's men's tennis players
Jimmy Holland and
Francisco Velazquez have been named to the 2004 Atlantic 10 all-conference team in voting conducted among the conference's head coaches. Velazquez becomes the first men's tennis player to earn all-Atlantic 10 honors three times in his career, while Holland was recognized for the first time.
Velazquez, a junior, competed at first singles for the third straight season and compiled a 13-13 record. The Aruba native became the career victories leader at Saint Joseph's earlier this spring, breaking Frank Barnett's record of 46 wins. Velazquez currently sports a 52-35 career record and his 31 wins at first singles place him second all-time at SJU behind Barnett.
Holland, a sophomore, has competed at second singles during his two years on Hawk Hill. The powerful southpaw went 13-17 in 2003-04 as SJU faced some of the region toughest teams. He compiled a 10-10 record during the spring season and went 2-1 at the 2004 Atlantic 10 Championships. The Coatesville, Pa. native set a SJU single season record last year with 23 wins and now has a 36-31 career record. He needs just three more wins at second singles to set the school record at that position.
With a fourth place finish, Saint Joseph's had its best showing at the Atlantic 10 Championships since competition began in 1986. The Hawks are currently 10-9 overall and visit Rutgers on Wednesday, April 21 at 2:30 p.m.
