PHILADELPHIA (2/22/04)- Saint Joseph's standout
Jameer Nelson has been named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the seventh time this season, tying Xavier's David West for the Atlantic 10 record set in 2002-03. It is the 13th weekly honor of Nelson's career, just one shy of the 14 accumlated by West from 2000 to 2003.
Nelson averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 6.5 assists in two Saint Joseph's wins as the second-ranked Hawks ran their record to 24-0, and 13-0 in the Atlantic 10. SJU clinched its second straight Atlantic 10 East Division title as well as its second consecutive Philadelphia Big 5 outright title.
The senior posted 18 points and nine assists in a 72-54 win at Fordham on Feb. 18, shooting 7-for-12 from the field against the Rams. Nelson closed the week with 18 points and six rebounds in a 76-53 win over Temple on Feb. 21, hitting 5-of-10 shots.
On the week, Nelson converted 12-for-22 (.545) from the field, 5-for-8 (.625) from three-point range, and 7-for-9 (.778) from the foul line.
One of the favorites for the National Player of the Year awards, Nelson is averaging 20.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 3.2 steals per game.
The Hawks look to keep the perfect season alive with two road games this week, at UMass on Feb. 25 and at Rhode Island on Feb. 28.
