PHILADELPHIA (7/22/02) - Saint Joseph's University lost one of its greatest coaches on July 18 with the passing of Joe Toland. The Hawks rowing coach from 1960 through 1973, Toland died this past Thursday of lung cancer. He was 73.
A decorated oarsman before taking over the reins of the SJU men's rowing team, Toland won national championships in every rowing event - with the exception of the single sculls - and was a gold and silver medalist at the 1955 Pan American Games in eight-and four-oared shells. Toland also competed with the United States rowing team in the 1948 Olympics at the age of 19.
At Saint Joseph's, Toland is best known for guiding the varsity heavyweight eight to the 1970 Dad Vail Regatta. That year, he also guided the SJU program to the Bratten Trophy given to the overall champion at the Dad Vail Regatta.
Overall, Toland's crew teams at SJU compiled an 84 percent winning percentage.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa George Toland; three sins, Jack, Tom and Joe, Jr.; four daughters, Maryellen Davis, Kate Benson, Kelly and Ann; a stepson, John George; a stepdaughter, Tracy McGuckin; a brother John Charles, and eight grandchildren.
A viewing will take place from 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. tomorrow at Ciavarelli Funeral Home, 951 E. Butler Pike, Ambler, Pa. A Funeral Mass will beb said at 11 a.m. tomorow, July 23, at the Immaculate Conception Church, 604 West Avenue, Jenkintown, Pa. Burial will be in the Holy Sepulchre Cementary in Cheltenham, Pa.
