Paine's Two Goals Lifts Hawks Past George Washington, 3-0

PHILADELPHIA - Senior forward Alisha Paine tallied two goal for the Hawks Friday evening as Saint Joseph's women's soccer team downed George Washington 3-0 at Finnesey Field.

Paine opened the scoring at 14:44 as she booted a shot off the near left post that caromed into the back right netting. Freshman Jeanie Neal set up the play as she sent a crossing pass from the right side of the field, finding Paine open on the left side of the box.

The score remained tight through the remainder of the first half, with the Hawks holding a 9-3 edge on shots.

In the second stanza, Paine put the Hawks up 2-0 a third of the way in. Streaking toward the right post, Paine received a pass from junior Megan Schutt and beat a diving Anna Handzlik at 61:41. Paine second goal of the game moved her into a tie for fifth place all-time in program history with seven goals in a season.

The Hawks would add to their lead six minutes later following a take down inside the George Washington box. Senior Jess Daugherty booted the penalty kick to the far right corner to seal the game for the Hawks at 67:29.

For the game, Saint Joseph's out shot the Colonials 12-9 and held a 4-1 advantage in corners.

Between the pipes, senior goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna was stellar for the Hawks, making five saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

For George Washington, Lise Backman led the way with four shots, while Handzlik made seven saves.

With the victory, the Hawks improve to 6-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The Colonials fall to 4-8-0 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday when it hosts La Salle. The contest, which will feature a senior day presentation prior to the game, will begin at noon.
