Hawks Earn 2-2 Tie at Xavier

CINCINNATI, OH - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team finished a solid Atlantic 10-opening weekend Sunday, earning a 2-2 tie at Xavier. Seniors Alisha Paine and Jess Daugherty tallied a goal apiece as SJU returns to Hawk Hill 1-0-1 in A-10 play.

In the opening stanza, Xavier struck first as Amber Silvis put the Musketeers on the board with a goal to the far post at 14:26. Silvis' goal came off a centering pass from Christine Chuck.

The Hawks would respond 10 minutes later as Paine tied the score at one all. Paine received a pass from junior Kimmy Leigh and beat Xavier's Lindsey Cullins to the far post to knot the game up.

Saint Joseph's kept its momentun, scoring its second goal in under three minutes. Daugherty put the Hawks up one, 2-1, off a penalty kick at 26:44.

The score remained in the Hawks' favor heading into the second stanza.

Unfortunately for Saint Joseph's, the Musketeers tied the game in the 56th minute as Shawn Reynolds headed home a shot of a free kick at 55:07.

Both teams continued to battle, but neither side would falter down the stretch.

For the game, Xavier outshot the Hawks 21-14 and held a 6-0 advantage in corners.

Individually for Saint Joseph's, senior goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna made seven saves on the day. Her seven saves gives her 81 on the season, moving her into fifth place all-time in single-season saves. Offensively, Paine and Daugherty combined for seven of the Hawks 14 shots.

For Xavier, Silvis led the way with eight shots, while back-up goalie Ashley Donaldson made four saves to earn the tie.

With the draw, the Hawks move to 5-5-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the A-10. Xavier moves to 5-5-1 with the draw and 1-1-1 in conference play.

Saint Jospeh's returns to action next Friday, at 7 p.m., when it hosts Duquesne.
