An early Fordham tally proved to be the difference Friday evening as a goal by Katie Sanchez pushed the Rams past Saint Joseph's women's soccer team 1-0.
Sanchez put Fordham up 1-0 in the eighth minute as Alexis Ribadeneyra recorded the assist. Sanchez took a centering pass and beat the Hawks' senior goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna to the right side from 15 yards out at 8:23.
The Rams kept control for much of the remaining first half as Fordham held a 10-4 advantage in shots.
In the second stanza, the Ram defense stiffened more so against the Hawks as SJU tallied only two second-half shots to Fordham's four.
For the game, the Rams out shot the Hawks 14-6, with only three of Saint Joseph's shots being on goal to Fordham's six.
DiEnna made five saves between the pipes for the Hawks as juniors Ali Wean and Megan Schutt tallied four of the team's shots.
For Fordham, Allie Cacciotti posted three saves to earn the shutout.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 7-8-3, and 3-3-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Fordham improves to 9-8-0 overall and 3-5-0 in conference play.
Saint Joseph's will finish the regular-season portion of its schedule Sunday at 12:30 at St. Bonaventure
