Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team got a late goal from senior Alisha Paine, but that wasn't enough as the Hawks fell 2-1 to Saint Louis Sunday afternoon at Hawk Hill.

Saint Louis got on the scoreboard first in the 24th minute, going the length of the field for the opening goal of the game. The Billikens' Cassi Winchel collected a forwarded pass midway between the half line and goalkeeper and blooped a shot over a charging Nicole DiEnna that found the back of the net at 23:37. Saint Louis' Courtney Hulcer started the play, collecting a loose ball and forwarding it to Maureen Hughes near midfield. Hughes turned and found a streaking Winchell to put the Billikens up by one.

The Billikens extended their lead to 2-0 less than seven minutes later as Kelly Ferguson headed home a centering pass from Tara Gresco. Ferguson took a centering pass from the right side of the field and directed it to the top-right corner of the netting at 29:08.

Despite trailing by two, the Hawks refused to give in, and came within one, 2-1 in the 84th minute. Senior forward Alisha Paine pushed home the ball off a scramble in front of Saint Louis' net at 83:30.

Unfortunately for Saint Joseph's, the Billikens controlled the ball for most of the remaining time to hold onto the win.

For the game Saint Louis outshot the Hawks 15-9 and held a 4-2 advantage in corners.

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 5-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Saint Louis improves to 9-3-0 overall and 4-0-0 in A-10 play.

The Hawks return to action next Friday when they host George Washington at 7 p.m.
