The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team halted its three-game losing skid Tuesday evening at Finnesey Field, earning a 1-1 tie with Lehigh.
The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second minute off a Lehigh foul. Saint Joseph's senior Jess Daugherty centered a ball from the left side to sophomore Kelly Galen in the middle of the box. Galen controlled the ball and beat the Mountain Hawks' Julie Kafka to the top-right corner of the net at 1:01. The goal snapped Lehigh's shutout streak of 456:23, as the Mountain Hawks had yet to yield a goal on the season.
Trailing by one late into the first stanza, the Mountain Hawks Melissa Montalvo and Gina Lewandowski created a scoring opportunity in the 39th minute. Coming in on a two-one-two situation, Montalvo sent a pass through the two Hawk defenders and hit Lewandowski in stride in front of the box. From there, Lewandowski booted the ball into the back left corner of the net to tie the score at one apiece at 40:05.
The score remained tied following 90 minutes of play as both teams had opportunities in the second half. Both the Hawks' senior goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna and Kafka failed to yield as the game moved to extra time.
In the extra frames, Lehigh out shot the Hawks 3-1, but neither team snuck a ball into the net.
For the game, Lehigh out shot Saint Joseph's 21-13 and held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Offensively, Galen's goal came on her lone shot of the game, senior forward Alisha Paine led the Hawks with three shots. In net, DiEnna moved 2-4-1 on the season, making nine saves on the evening.
For Lehigh, Lewandowski paced the Mountain Hawks with six shots, as Montalvo and Amy Mastromonaco each added four apiece. Kafka made six saves between the pipes for Lehigh.
With the tie, Saint Joseph's moves to 2-4-1 overall, while Lehigh goes to 4-0-1.
The Hawks return to action Friday at Monmouth at 4 p.m.
