Sept. 16, 2005

Box Score

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - Junior Kimmy Leigh scored the gamewinning goal in the 62nd minute to lead visiting Saint Joseph's to a 3-2 win over Monmouth in women's soccer action.

SJU, now 3-4-1, took an early lead when Alisha Paine played a ball on the ground into the box that found the foot of junior Ali Wean, who beat Monmouth goalkeeper Katie Buffa at the near post. The Hawks added to their lead 10 minutes later when Leigh found junior Megan Schutt for the 2-0 advantage.

Monmouth scored one before halftime as Kate Sands followed her own chance and headed a bounding ball into the net at 21:47. In the 53rd minute, Sands set up the game-tying goal as the midfielder sent a corner kick into the box, which was headed in by classmate Maureen Masto, knotting the score at 2-2.

The winning goal came at 61:50, when Paine delivered her second assist of the match, finding a streaking Leigh in the box who struck a ball into the far netting for the 3-2 lead.

Monmouth outshot the Hawks, 14-13 in the match, forcing SJU keeper Nicole DiEnna to make five saves. Monmouth's Buffa made five saves of her own, in her first collegiate start between the pipes.

The Hawks get a rare week off before traveling to UNC-Wilmington on September 23.
