Hawks Fall at George Mason 6-1

FAIRFAX, VA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team had its two-game winning streak snapped Tuesday evening as George Mason downed the Hawks 6-1.

The Colonials jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening seven minutes of the match. Laura Salichs tallied the opening goal in the second minute, while Rachel Wiggins put George Mason up by two after stealing and pass in front of the Saint Joseph's goal and sending it to the back of the net at 6:18.

Despite trailing by two, Saint Joseph's fought back and cut the deficit to one, 2-1 in the 15th minute. Junior Megan Schutt took a pass from classmate Ali Wean and beat the Colonials goalkeeper at 14:21.

Clinging to a one-goal advantage at the half, George Mason came out strong in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals on 14 shots to hold off the Hawks.

For the game, the Colonials out shot the Hawks 29-14, and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Schutt led all Saint Joseph's players with four shots, while Wean added two. Senior goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna made 10 saves in the loss for the Hawks.

Wiggins, who added two second-half goals for the Colonials, led all players with eight shots. Amy Sorenson and Nilani Duarte also tallied second-half goals for George Mason

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 2-2, while George Mason improves to 2-2.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Friday at noon when it faces American University in the opening round of the Georgetown Invitational
