Seniors Lead SJU Women's Soccer Past Duquesne, 4-2

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team got a strong offensive performance from its seniors as the Hawks topped Duquesne, 4-2 Sunday afternoon. Four of five Hawk seniors tallied a point in the Atlantic 10 match-up with the Dukes.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Nancy Cook at 4:09 off a pass from classmate Ali Wean.

Saint Joseph upped its advantage to 2-0 at 29:45 as senior Megan Schutt scored off a pass from classmate Kimmy Leigh.

The Hawks took their 2-0 lead into the second half, but a strong rush by Duquesne quickly changed that. The Dukes cut the deficit to 2-1 as Michelle Esposito gathered a rebound and beat SJU's freshman goalkeeper Megan Bastanelli at 60:13.

Duquesne tied the score nine minutes later as Christine Murawski beat Bastanelli at 69:22.

The tie didn't last long as Wean put the Hawks up 3-2 less than two minutes later off a steal deep in the Dukes' end.

Wean would add an insurance goal at 78:29 as her corner kick beat Duquesne's Virginia Bondi to put SJU up for good, 4-2.

For the game, Duquesne out shot the Hawks 20-16 and held a 14-4 edge in corners.

Individually, Wean led Saint Joseph's with two goals and an assist, while Cook and Schutt finished with a goal apiece. Leigh added an assist for the Hawks, while Bastanelli made seven saves for the win.

At the other end, Bondi made four saves in the loss.

With the victory, the Hawks improve to 6-10 on the year and 3-4 in Atlantic 10 play. Duquesne falls to 4-8-2 on the year and 3-3-1 in the A-10.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Friday, October 27 when they host St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m.
