The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team started the 2006 season on the right note as the Hawks downed Wagner 13-9 Friday evening at Finnesey Field.
The Hawks got on the board first as Jenny Egan put Saint Joseph's up 1-0 at 24:33 of the first half.
Wagner rallied with two goals of its own to take a 2-1 lead, but it was short lived.
Saint Joseph's scored four straight from the 17:12 mark to 11:59, to take a 5-2 lead, one it would never relinquish. Kerry O'Connell tallied two of her team-high four goals during the run.
The Seahawks added two more goals, while Saint Joseph's tallied one over the final minutes of the first stanza as SJU took a 6-4 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Hawks opened up the period with two straight goals, to take an 8-4 edge on a Kristina Jaggers goal at 25:02.
Both teams would exchange two-goal runs with the Hawks leading 12-7 with 7:56 remaining in the game.
Saint Joseph's gave up two goals over that period, but held on for the 13-9 win.
In the pipes, Sarah Magan made five saves for the Hawks, while O'Connell and Jaggers added four goals apiece.
At the other end, Jessica Richmond and Heather George tallied three goals apiece in the loss.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 1-0 on the season, while Wagner falls to 0-2.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday at Drexel.
