NEWARK, DE -
The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team dropped its season-opening game at Delaware Friday evening as the Hawks fell to the Fightin' Blue Hens 1-0.
Delaware controlled the pace for much of the first half as it out shot Saint Joseph's 9-1. The Fightin' Blue Hens' offensive pressure led to the lone goal of the game in the 29th minute by Caitlyn Germain. Germain, who tallied the game-winning goal in last year's 1-0 win over Saint Joseph's, gathered a loose ball from the top of the box and beat the Hawks' sophomore goalkeeper Jen Kuhn from 20 yards out to put Delaware up 1-0.
The score would remain the same over the final 16 minutes of the first half as the Fightin' Blue Hens took a one goal lead into halftime.
In the second stanza, Saint Joseph's offense began to click as it registered four shots. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Bonnie Mills failed to yield a goal for Delaware over the final 45 minutes as the Fightin' Blue Hens downed the Hawks in the season opener for the fourth straight year.
For the game, the Fightin' Blue Hens out shot Saint Joseph's 14-5, but held only a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Between the posts, both Kuhn and Mills made four saves apiece.
Individually, seniors Nancy Cook and Megan Schutt both tallied two shots on goal.
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls 0-1 on the season, while Delaware improves to 1-0.
Saint Joseph's opens the home portion of its schedule this Thursday, August 31, when the Hawks host Wagner at 7 p.m.
