Putting together arguably its best offensive game of the season, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team downed Fordham 72-43 Thursday evening at Rose Hill Gym. The Hawks finished 28-of-59 from the field on the night (47.5 percent), and dished out 23 assists as they held the Rams to only 12-of-46 from the floor (26.1 percent).
Both teams came out sluggish to begin the game, with the Rams holding an early 9-8 edge with 15:41 remaining in the half.
It was all Saint Joseph's from there though as the Hawks went on a 29-7 run to end the half. Senior forward Erica Pollock poured in a team-high 10 points during the stretch as SJU finished 16-of-30 from the field (53.3 percent) and 5-of-7 from behind the arc (71.4 percent).
Defensively, the Hawks did a solid job in the opening stanza, holding Fordham's Lisa Carrol to only four points, while the Rams went 5-of-23 from the field (21.7 percent).
The second half was more of the same for Saint Joseph's as they saw their lead bloom to as many as 33, with all 13 Hawks earning playing time.
Individually, sophomore guard Jen Oyler led all scorers with 16 points, while Pollock added 12 points and eight rebounds. Saint Joseph's senior guard Ayahna Cornish added 10 points, while sophomore Mary Kate McDade had a game-high eight assists.
With the win, the Hawks move to 9-8 on the year and 2-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Fordham falls to 2-16 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. at Saint Louis.
