EASTON, Pa. -
The Saint Joseph's field hockey team took advantage of its biggest offensive output of the season to record a 4-2 victory over the Lafayette Leopards Wednesday night at Rappolt Field in Easton, Pa. Senior Brianne Miller scored two goals on the night, tying the game midway through the first half and scoring an insurance goal to put the game away late. The win evens SJU's record at 4-4 and gives the Hawks their third straight triumph.
Lafayette (2-5) got on the board early as Laura Fabian maneuvered around senior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer and put the Leopards on top just three minutes into the game. Lafayette maintained control of the game until the Hawks broke through near the midway point of the half. Miller scored her second goal of the season on a penalty corner attempt. Fellow seniors Katie Young and Theresa Barbati tallied assists on the play. Three minutes later, Young and Barbati again teamed up on a penalty corner goal by freshman Jen Wrublesky to put SJU on top. The lead was short-lived, however, as Anna DePetris equalized for the Leopards two minutes later, sending the teams into halftime tied, 2-2.
Saint Joseph's took control of the match midway through the second stanza, as junior Marisa Pizzi scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Wrublesky. Miller then added her second of the game and third of the year to secure the win for the Hawks.
After an even-handed first half, SJU dominated the second, outshooting Lafayette 6-0 for the period and 10-6 for the game. Cunfer made two saves to earn the victory.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday, September 23 with a game at American University in Washington, D.C. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
