PHILADELPHIA--The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell to the #22-ranked Dayton Flyers, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. Sophomore Colin Baker tallied his fifth goal of the season.
SJU dominated the first half against the nationally-ranked Flyers, keeping them on their heels with constant pressure. The Hawks finally broke through when Alex Garst's shot was saved by Dayton's Tyler Picard (four saves) and the rebound was put away by Baker for the 1-0 lead at 31:21.
Saint Joseph's (4-7-2, 1-5-1 Atlantic 10) looked to be heading into the halftime with a 1-0 lead until a scramble in front of the net led to a Jeff Popella goal with 2:07 left in the half that barely got by Rocco Pozzessere on the goal line.
UD would attack again just a couple minutes later when Joe Olwig sent a rebound just across the line before SJU's Travis Gast could clear it from the net. The Flyers went into the half with a 2-1 advantage. SJU out-shot the Flyers 8-7 in the first half, but Dayton held a 22-14 edge for the game.
Dayton (12-3-2, 6-1-1 Atlantic 10) came out of the gate with header goals by Lucas Young and Ryan Handbury for a 4-1 lead through 50 minutes.
Popella, Alex Torda and Ben Murray would go on to add goal for UD and the final scoreline.
Bryan Benedict made the start in goal for the Hawks making four saves, while Joe Bodnar made one save as a reserve.
Saint Joseph's will return to Finnesey Field on Friday to take on cross-town rival La Salle at 7:30 p.m.
