PHILADELPHIA - Thanks to a second-half goal by senior forward Amanda Morrell, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team extended its win streak to five games as the Hawks earned a 2-1 victory at Drexel Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field.
Saint Joseph's struck first in the matchup of Philadelphia schools, as junior Lauren Sutcliffe put the Hawks up 1-0 at the 30:19 mark. Sutcliffe was able to gather a loose in the Drexel box as the Dragons failed to clear it. Sutcliffe gained control and drove a shot to the upper left hand corner, beating Drexel's goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond.
Drexel tied the game at 1-1 with just under 19 minutes left in the contest. The Dragons took advantage of a penalty kick after a SJU defender took down Drexel's Jenna Lindsay inside the Saint Joseph's box. On the penalty shot, Drexel's Aleka Yiantsos drilled a shot past SJU's junior goalkeeper Megan Bastianelli (Bear, Del./St. Mark') at 71:45.
On the ensuing whistle, Saint Joseph's freshman Maggie Lupinski quickly got the ball up to Morrell. Morrell took the pass from left side of the box and beat Bond to the far side to give the Hawks the lead once again - just 11 seconds later - at 71:56.
Drexel managed just one more shot over the remained of the game, as SJU held on for the victory.
For the game, Drexel out shot Saint Joseph's 18-11, with Bastianelli making a game-high seven saves.
Saint Joseph's opens Atlantic 10 play this Friday at Rhode Island. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
