The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team carried its momentum from the non-conference portion of the schedule into Atlantic 10 play, upping its win streak to six straight with a 1-0 victory at Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 Conference opener at URI Soccer Complex.
The Hawks (6-2-0) got on the scoreboard early versus the Rams behind freshman Jen Pfeiffer's team-leading fifth goal of the year. Coming off a free kick, Pfeiffer took a pass from senior Allie Dowling and beat Rhode Island's goalkeeper Jackie Fede to put Saint Joseph's up 1-0 at 18:16.
Saint Joseph's freshman goalkeeper Cara Critchlow and the rest of the Hawks made the score stand over the remaining 71:44 as the Hawks moved to 1-0-0 in A-10 play. Playing stellar between the pipes, Critchlow recorded nine saves for her third shutout of the season, including three saves during a four-minute barrage by the Rams early into the second half.
For the game, Rhode Island (4-5-, 0-1-0 A-10) out shot the Hawks 18-6 and finished a with a 3-2 edge in corners.
Amanda Thomas and Adrienne Ruhe Lischke each tallied four shots a piece for the Rams, while Fede made one save in the losing effort.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday when the Hawks host Dayton at 1 p.m.
