Saint Joseph's Women's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw With Dayton

Sept. 28, 2008

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Behind a 12-save performance by freshman goalkeeper Cara Critchlow and a goal by classmate Jen Pfeiffer, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team earned a 1-1 double overtime draw with Dayton Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. With the tie, the Hawks move to 1-0-1 in Atlantic 10 play and 6-2-1 overall on the season.

The Flyers (7-3-1, 1-0-1 A-10) got on the board first on a Jerica DeWolfe goal in the 25th minute to put UD up 1-0. Dayton's Colleen Gibson got the ball on the right hand side of the field, and found an open DeWolfe in the middle of the Saint Joseph's box. DeWolfe took the pass and lofted a shot over the outstretched hands of Critchlow and off the crossbar into the back of the net at the 24:49 mark.

Dayton held its one-goal edge into the second half, but Saint Joseph's scored quickly to even the game at one apiece on a goal by Pfeiffer in the 52nd minute. With the ball deep in the Flyers' end, sophomore Lauren Sawyer pressured a Dayton defender, causing a turnover. Sawyer got the ball to senior Laura Adams, only to have Adams' shot deflected into the middle of the box to Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer calmly took the ball, and with Dayton's goalkeeper Deana Waintraub caught at the right side of the goal, carefully placed a shot to the back of net on the left side at 51:09.

With the game tied, both teams had several scoring chances, with the Flyers out shooting the Hawks 24-9 in the second half and overtime periods. Fortunately for SJU, Critchlow was there to make the save, finishing with a game-high 12, while Waintraub ended with four saves for Dayton.

For the game, the Flyers out shot the Hawks 31-12, but Saint Joseph's ended ahead in corner kicks 5-3.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Wednesday at city-rival Penn. Game time is set for 7:30.
