PHILADELPHIA -
Saint Joseph's women's soccer team posted its second-straight win as the Hawks topped St. Bonaventure, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. An early goal for SJU would be the difference as the Hawks moved to 3-2-1 in Atlantic 10 play and 6-5-3 overall.
In a game heavily dominated by Saint Joseph's offense, the Hawks tallied their lone goal in the 22nd minute off a corner kick. Senior Danielle Debernardo played the corner kick back to junior Kaitlyn Grimes on the left side of the field and with no one covering her, Grimes lifted a ball into a pile of players in St. Bonaventure's box. Saint Joseph's sophomore Jen Pfeiffer was there to capitalize, heading the ball to the bottom right corner of the net to put the Hawks up 1-0 at 21:11.
Saint Joseph's went on to out shoot St. Bonaventure (7-7-0, 4-1-0) 5-1 over the remainder of the first half, but held just the one-goal advantage heading into the second stanza.
In the final half, the Hawks' offense took over, blistering 11 shots to the Bonnies two.
St. Bonaventure's best scoring opportunity came in the 52nd minute off a corner kick. Fortunately for SJU, the shot was too strong and went over the net.
The Hawks stellar defense kept the Bonnies in check from there, as SJU freshman goalkeeper Kat Kelble earned her third win of the year without making a save.
For the game, Saint Joseph's outshot SBU 21-4 and held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
St. Bonaventure's Courtney Bosse led the way for the visitors with two shots as the Bonnies suffered their first Atlantic 10 loss of the year.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Friday at Fordham at 5 p.m.
