Saint Joseph's Falls at Temple, 60-48

Feb. 15, 2009

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team couldn't make it a clean sweep of city rivals for the week, as the Hawks fell at Temple, 60-48, Sunday afternoon at the Liacouras Center. The Hawks, who beat La Salle earlier in the week, fell to 11-14 on the year and 3-7 in Atlantic 10 play with the loss.

Down 28-25 to start the second half, Saint Joseph's quickly tied the game on a three pointer by senior guard Mary Kate McDade at 19:42. Unfortunately the Hawks would never gain the lead.

Temple quickly regained contro1. Up 32-30, the Owls went on a 20-4 run from 16:27 to 6:44, opening up a 52-34 advantage as a Lindsey Kimmel three pointer capped the run. Saint Joseph's was held to just 1-of-9 from the field and five turnovers during that stretch.

Saint Joseph's would come no closer than the final score over the remaining time as the Hawks dropped their second game of the year to Temple.

In the first half, the Hawks' offense came out cold, shooting just 1of-8 from the floor to start, while turning the ball over twice. At the other end, Temple took advantage of Saint Joseph's poor start, sprinting out to a 14-3 edge as a pair of free throws by Shanea Cotton gave the Owls an 11-point advantage with 14:40 to go in the period.

Down 16-7, SJU pieced together a 10-3 run from 10:45 to 6:45, cutting its deficit to three on a layup by junior guard Mariame Djouara.

Temple answered back with two straight baskets to up its lead to seven, 24-17, but the Hawks scored six straight points to make it a one-point game, 24-23, with 3:59 to go in the half on a jump shot by McDade.

The Owls would go on to outscore Saint Joseph's 4-2 over the remainder of the first stanza as Temple took a 28-25 lead into halftime.

As a team, the Hawks shot just 30.6 percent for the game (19-of-62), with senior Jenna Loschiavo tallying a team-high 14 points.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Wednesday, February 18, at Fordham. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Rose Hill Gym.
