STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse used a 7-1 run to break open a two-goal game and defeat Wagner, 16-8, in Staten Island on Saturday. Jenna Martino used a six-point effort to guide the Hawks. SJU outscored Wagner 9-3 in the second half.
Saint Joseph's (3-1), fresh off its 10-8 win at Delaware, struggled to assert itself early. With the game tied at three, SJU ran off three straight goals from Abby Renninger and Martino with 8:03 remaining.
Wagner (0-2) would score two of the last three goals in the half to cut the deficit to two at 7-5. After trading goals with the Seahawks again, SJU ran off seven of the next eight tallies to make it a 15-7 game with just 5:03 left.
During that span the Hawks received goals from Martino, Alli MacDonald, Jen Peters, Helene Tursi, Meghan McDevitt, and Jessica Westlake. Only one of those goals was assisted, which was Westlake's off a pass from Martino.
Julie Mineweaser opened up the scoring for Saint Joseph's just 4:45 into the game to knot the game at one. The Seahawks would seize the lead again just three minutes later but Martino and McDevitt scored back-to-back goals, which would assure the Hawks wouldn't fall behind the rest of the day.
Suzy Herlihy made six saves in net for Saint Joseph's, which won its third straight game.
For the afternoon, SJU out-shot the Seahawks 42-17 and won 17 of 25 draws. Saint Joseph's committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 21 from the Seahawks, causing 13 directly. The lone down point on an otherwise positive game was the fact SJU went 3-for-13 on free-position shots.
The Hawks will return to action next week when they host the George Mason Patriots. Game time is set for noon on Finnesey Field.
