PHILADELPHIA -
The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped their home opener to Drexel, 4-1 on Wednesday evening. Freshman Kevin Kirsch scored his first career goal for the Hawks.
SJU put a point on the board first, when 10 minutes into the match, Kirsch dribbled a ball down center field and fired a shot into the bottom of the net from 35 yards out. Despite playing tough defense and pulling Drexel offsides five times in the first half, the Dragons would retaliate. Mike Crosse chipped a shot over Hawks' keeper Andrew D'Ottavi's head to tie the game at the 35:17 mark to make it a 1-1 draw at the half.
Nine minutes into the second half, the Dragons took the lead when Fabio Assumpcao knocked a free kick past D'Ottavi into the top left corner. Five minutes later D'Ottavi punched a shot shot out but Crosse picked up the rebound to score his second goal of the night. Drexel would score again on a penalty kick six minutes later to make it a 4-1 game.
D'Ottavi made five saves on the night to make a .640 save percentage for the season.
The Hawks (0-3) will travel to James Madison on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. match.
