Women's Soccer Drops Atlantic 10 Opener at Richmond, 2-1, in Overtime

Oct. 1, 2010

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team was five minutes from victory Friday night at Richmond, only to have the Spiders tally a goal in the 86th minute and another in overtime to top the Hawks, 2-1, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both squads.

Saint Joseph's senior Lauren Sawyer put her team on the board early as she converted off a pass from junior Jen Pfeiffer. Receiving a pass in the middle of the Richmond box, Sawyer easily beat the opposing keeper to put her team up, 1-0 at 16:23.

The Hawks (3-7-0, 0-1 Atlantic 10) kept the Spiders off the scoreboard for nearly 70 minutes, but Richmond's Becca Wann tied the game at 1-1 off a pass from Emily Parisi at 85:32.

The Spiders' (4-5-1, 1-0 A-10) offense pressed forward during the extra frame, posting four shots to SJU's none. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Richmond's fourth shot, off the foot of Wann, gave the hosts the 2-1 victory at the 99:43 mark.

Individually, Sawyer posted a team-best two shots on goal, with Pfeiffer registering five shots total. As a team, the Hawks were outshot 17-12, with sophomore goalkeeper Christine Neal making a game-high seven saves for SJU.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday at George Washington. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
