The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 match to Richmond on Friday night at Finnesey Field. Goalkeeper Yiannys Degermentzidis made seven saves in goal for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's traded shots with Richmond, as the two teams battled to a scoreless first half with Richmond owning a 9-7 edge in shots.
In the second half, Saint Joseph's Rocco Pozzessere had a near goal in the 70th minute of play when he fired a ball to the bottom left corner of the net but Spiders' goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson made a diving save.
At the 73:25 mark, Richmond's Houston Oldham crossed a ball to the right side where teammate Jake Russell one-touched a ball into the bottom right corner of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
Russell sealed the win for the Spiders with 2:31 to go when he dribbled a cleared ball from midfield, got past a SJU defender, tapped it to the right of Degermentzidis, and then scored on an open net.
Overall, the Spiders outshot the Hawks 23-13 on the night and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Sunday when it hosts George Washington in its final game of the season. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field.
