Concordia College completed the sweep of this weekend's four
game series with a pair of wins over the University of the Sciences
baseball team, 6-0 and 11-5 at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia
Sunday afternoon.
In the opener Jarrad Gustin (Central Dauphin HS/Harrisburg, Pa.)
limited the Clippers to just one hit over the first five innings
before tiring in the sixth, allowing four Clipper runs on five
hits. The Devils could muster no offense against Concordia starter
Keith Malanga, who held USP to just three hits, two of which came
in their final at-bat. Gustin took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings
and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out two. Kyle Davis (Garnet Valley HS/Garnet Valley, Pa.), Pete LaRocco
(Gloucester Catholic HS/Sewell, N.J.) and Mark Perry (Toms River
South/Toms River, N.J.) accounted for the Devils three hits.
In the second game, Concordia scored three times in the opening
frame off starter and losing pitcher Michael Croft (Franklin Towne
Charter/Philadelphia, Pa.) and opened up a 5-1 lead before the
Devils pulled within one with a three-run third. Catcher Mark Forbes (Salesianum HS/Hockessin, Del.) delivered the big blow, a
two run double with the bases-loaded, scoring Nick Szalejko
(Archbishop Carroll HS/Norristown, Pa.) (hit by pitch) and Davis
(walk). Luke Peyton (Haddonfield HS/Haddonfield, N.J.), seeing a
rare spot start at the designated hitter position, drove in the
Devils third run of the inning with an infield groundout.
The Clippers blew the game open with four runs in the fourth to
take a 9-4 lead. LaRocco tripled with one out in the fifth and came
around on Peyton's single to pull the Devils closer at 9-5 but the
Clippers added two more in their final at-bat to close out the
weekend with an 11-5 win and a four-game sweep of the Devils.
LaRocco had three hits in the game. Forbes and Peyton had two RBI
apiece while Davis had one. USP starter Croft faced just nine
batters, giving up four runs on four hits.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 when
they face perennial CACC powerhouse Wilmington University in New
Castle, Delaware. The doubleheader is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
