Baseball and Kutztown Trade Late Grand Slams in Split on Wednesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Evan Sinclair's third grand slam of the season capped a five-run seventh in USciences baseball's 13-9 game one triumph at Kutztown on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears would return the favor with a fifth-inning grand slam in the nightcap to secure the split with a 9-6 win.

The Devils' 15 wins this season are now the second most in the program's Division II era, just two behind the record of 17 set in 2019.

That grand slam highlighted a day in which Sinclair went 6-for-9 with two homers, two doubles, six RBI and five runs.

The senior is now tied with teammate Nick Cerelli for the program's recorded single-season record (since 2005) of eight home runs. His nine career home runs rank tied for ninth all-time, while his 10 doubles and 46 hits this year are tied for seventh and eighth, respectively, in recorded history.

Joe Duffy also reached base six times, finishing 4-for-7 with two walks, two doubles, four runs, two stolen bases and an RBI.

The senior broke two records on the day as he is now the program's all-time leader with 111 runs, while his 30 walks this year are the program's new recorded single-season record. He also moved up to second all-time with 38 stolen bases, third with 74 walks and tied for eighth with 124 hits. His 52 hits this year are now third in recorded history, and he joined Sinclair in double-digit doubles.

Frank Pollock went 4-for-7 too, with a home run, double, walk, four RBI and three runs.

Game One

Sinclair's grand slam put an exclamation on the five-run seventh that saw the first five Devils to come to the plate score.

AJ Pena and Duffy led off with back-to-back singles, before Cerelli drove in the game-tying run with a double.

Pollock then walked prior to Sinclair's dramatics.

Kutztown loaded the bases itself in the bottom-half, with one out, only to have Eli Agostini strand them to pick up his first career win.

Sinclair also had a solo shot in the first inning to put USciences ahead 2-0, and he had an RBI double in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-7. It was the senior's first career two-homer game, while his six RBI were a new career-high. The four-hit and two-double performances were both the second of his career.

Duffy also reached base four times as recorded his second career game with three hits and three runs, adding a double, base on balls and stolen base. He opened the scoring on a balk in the first.

Pollock and Pena both had two hits, an RBI double and a walk, with Pollock adding two runs. Pena's RBI double extended the lead to 3-0 in the second, while Pollock's made the score 6-4 in the fourth, following KU's five-run second.

Louis Fresta then hit his first career home run to tie the score at 6-6 in the fifth.

Both teams scored twice in their next at-bats. Kutztown made the score 8-6 in the bottom-half, only to have the Sinclair double cut the deficit to one in the sixth, before he eventually came around to knot the score once more on a passed ball.

The Golden Bears once again had an answer, as an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth gave them an opportunity to close out the game in the seventh.

Cerelli also doubled in the nightcap, as his 14 are now in sole possession of second in the program's recorded single season record book, while his 30 runs rank tied for fifth with Eddie Parry, who scored on Fresta's homer.

Parry and Hunter Parish notably walked twice, with Parish also stealing a career-high two bases. Parish's 24 base on balls this year ranking tied for sixth in the recorded history.

Game Two

University of the Sciences did not trail until a fifth-inning grand slam, as Pollock's first-inning two-run homer – his third of the season – put the Devils on top 2-0.

Parish completed a three-run first with an RBI fielder's choice, and Pollcok cancelled out KU's first inning run with a sacrifice fly in the third to re-establish a three-run advantage.

That advantage reached as high as four-runs following Vince Cammisa's two-out RBI single four batters later, but the Golden Bears quick erased that lead with four unearned runs in the bottom-half.

Duffy put the USciences back on top with an RBI double in the fourth, and Ryan Hess worked a scoreless fifth, but again an error doomed the Devils, extending the fifth for the grand slam.

University of the Sciences would not score again, despite Cammisa advancing to third in the sixth and Pollock reaching scoring position in the seventh.

Pollock and Sinclair both had two hits, with Pollock driving in the three runs and Sinclair scoring twice on Parish's fielder's choice and Cammisa's single.

Cammisa, Duffy and Parry all reached twice with a base knock and a walk, with Cammisa stealing two bases and Duffy another.

Duffy scored on Pollock's home run after leading off the nightcap with a base on balls, with Parry later singling prior to Parish's fielder's choice.

Cerellis's double led off the third, leading to him scoring on Pollock's sacrifice fly.

Pena notably moved into a tie for 10th in program history with his 75th career run after leading off the fourth with a single.

University of the Sciences out-hit Kutztown 9-6 in the loss.
