Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – The University of the Sciences baseball team went out in style.
Playing its final games as a program on Saturday, the Devils swept Bloomfield, 2-1 and 8-3, on Saturday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field.
University of the Sciences' 17 victories this season tie the Division II program record set in 2019.
Prior to first pitch the Devils honored the senior class of Eli Agostini, Nick Cerelli, Evan Sinclair, Joe Duffy, AJ Pena, Chris Anderson, Austin Blumetti, John McCrane and Justin Derk.
Derk celebrated the occasion with a two-hit gem for his third complete-game victory this season to improve his record to 5-4 on the year, tied for the third-most single-season wins in the program's Division II history.
University of the Sciences then used a four-run fifth in the nightcap, highlighted by Cerelli's three-RBI double, to break a 3-3 tie.
Cerelli had a perfect nightcap, finishing 3-for-3 with those three RBI, two runs, a walk and stolen base. The double was his 15th, now tied for the program's Division II single-season record.
Game One
Frank Pollock and Sinclair extended the first with a two-out walk and single for Eddie Parry, who doubled them home for the game-winning runs.
Derk faced the minimum through four, giving up just a one-out single that was immediately followed by a double play.
A leadoff walk in the fifth led to Bloomfield halving the deficit on a two-out double, but Derk was able to strand the runner on third following an error.
He then worked his fourth and fifth 1-2-3 innings in both the sixth and seventh, putting a bow on his two-hitter by retiring a seventh straight batter.
Pollock and Sinclair both reached base twice as they had back-to-back singles in the sixth.
Pollock also walked in the nightcap to end the day with 27 on the year, fourth in the program's Division II history, while Sinclair's two hits gave him 48 on the year, now tied for sixth.
Game Two
Anderson and Pena led off the fifth with back-to-back walks and Duffy singled to load the bases for Cerelli.
Pollock followed with an RBI single to put a stamp on the frame, before closing out the scoring with yet another RBI single in the sixth.
Ben Bradt and Chris Brown threw 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh to secure the final win in USciences baseball history.
That completed a day in which the pitching staff allowed just six hits across 14 innings.
McCrane, the starter, did not surrender a hit in his two frames, retiring six of the seven batters he faced, before Blumetti threw the third and Agostini threw the fourth and fifth to earn his second win in three days.
Duffy, Pollock and Parry joined Cerelli with multiple hits, with Duffy's two hits moving him into second in the program's Division II history with 54 on the year.
Duffy, Pena and Cerelli all scored twice, with Pena's two runs moving him into sole possession of 10th all-time with 77 for his career, and Cerelli's moving him into a tie for fourth in the program's single-season history with 32.
Hunter Parish notably walked in both games, with his 26 this year now tied for fifth in the program's Division II history.
Bloomfield tied the score at 3-3 with a home run in the third and two runs in the fifth to cancel out the Devils' three-run first.
Duffy led the first off with a single and after back-to-back walks by Cerelli and Pollock, an error allowed two unearned runs to score. Parry then completed the frame with an RBI groundout.
