Junior Mark Perry becomes the 13th baseball player in school
history to record 100 career hits as the University of the Sciences
in Philadelphia baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference
games to Millersville University 11-1 and 10-5 at Richie Ashburn
Field Sunday afternoon.
Perry (Toms River South HS/Toms River, N.J.) entered the game
with 98 career hits in 111 career games. The junior first baseman
recorded a single in the fourth inning of the opener and reached
the century mark with a double in the seventh. He later scored the
Devils lone run of the game, coming home on Mark Forbes'
(Salesianum HS/Hockessin, Del.) RBI single. Perry added another
double in the nightcap, his seventh of the season and 22nd of his
career, moving him into ninth place on the Devils all-time doubles
list. Perry and Forbes each had two hits in the game.
Millersville scored five times in the first two innings and
added three more in the fourth en route to an 11-1 first game win.
Brandon Boucher (Washington Township HS/Sewell, N.J.) took the
loss, giving up eight runs on nine hits while walking three and
striking out four in 3 1/3 innings pitched.
In the nightcap, Millersville sent nine men to the plate struck
for five runs in the first inning off starting and eventual losing
pitcher Michael Croft (Franklin Towne Charter/Philadelphia, Pa.)
and made it stand up for a 10-5 win. The Devils showed some signs
of offense in the bottom half of the inning, getting two of the
runs back. Kyle Davis (Garnet Valley HS/Garnet Valley, Pa.) and
Mike Gartland (Gloucester Catholic HS/Gloucester City, N.J.) drew
walks to leadoff the inning and were promptly sacrificed ahead into
scoring position by Perry. Davis then scored on a Forbes sacrifice
fly and Gartland later scored on Lou Tomasetti's (Monsignor Bonner
HS/Drexel Hill, Pa.) two-out single, making the score 5-2.
Croft faced two batters in the second, giving up a double and a
single with 'Ville's Ryan Mccormick scoring on an infield error
before being replaced by Jarrad Gustin (Central Dauphin
HS/Harrisburg, Pa.). The Marauders led 7-2 before the Devils came
back with three more runs in the bottom of the second to cut the
deficit to 7-5. Pete LaRocco (Gloucester Catholic HS/Sewell, N.J.)
led off with a single and later scored on Davis' first collegiate
home run. Gartland followed with a single and came around to score
the Devils third run of the inning on Perry's double.
The Marauders tagged Gustin for three runs in the third inning
to make the score 10-5. Sciences managed just three hits, all
singles and in different innings as Millersville completed the
sweep with the win. Davis finished the game going 3-for-3 with two
runs scored and two RBI.
The Devils are now 1-26 overall and return to action on Tuesday,
April 13, 2010 when they face Lincoln University in a non
conference road game.
