Pete
LaRocco and Kyle Davis both
extended their hitting streaks, but Chestnut Hill College scored
seven times in the first three innings as they defeated the
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia baseball team 8-3
Thursday evening at Hostelley field in north Wales,
Pennsylvania.
The Devils fall to 4-31 with the loss while Chestnut Hill
improves to 13-18.
LaRocco (Gloucester Catholic HS/Sewell, N.J.) had a double and a
single to extend his hitting streak to a team-high eight games. His
two hits move him into a tie for 17th place on the Devils all-time
hit list with 94. Davis (Garnet Valley HS/Garnet Valley, Pa.)
extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the
seventh inning. He also drew two walks to bring his total to 27 on
the season. His single was his 50th hit of the season, becoming
just the second baseball player in program history to record 50 or
more hits in one season (Michael Curry had 61 in 2008).
The Griffins touched starter Michael Croft
for three runs in the first inning and three more in the second
before Jarrad Gustin
was brought in to stop the bleeding. Justin gave up one run in the
third and another in the fifth in 5 1/3 innings of work. LaRocco
worked a scoreless eighth inning. Croft took the loss to fall to
0-4 on the season.
The Devils scored twice in the fourth inning. Davis walked and
stole second. Dustin Gill
followed with a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch,
setting the table for LaRocco who doubled down the right field line
to score both runners and cut the Griffins lead to 7-2. CHC's Bryan
Henry had a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make
the score 8-2 before the Devils scored their final run in their
half of the seventh inning.
Lou
Tomasetti doubled to left-centerfield to lead off and advanced
to third on a passed ball. He came around to score on Jeff Murtha's
groundout. The Devils threatened in the eighth inning, but left the
bases loaded and again left two runners on in the ninth inning.
Justin Wiercinski took the win for the Griffins.
The Devils return to action on Saturday when they travel to
Waterbury, Connecticut to take on Post University for a CACC
doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
