Box Score 2 The Felician College baseball team swept its Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference doubleheader from visiting University of the
Sciences in Philadelphia, 9-3 and 5-4, late Saturday at the
Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The games ended the regular season
for both schools.
The Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener, getting a run
in the second and two more in the fourth. Dennis
Murphy's two-out double in the second scored Mark Perry who
had singled two batters earlier. In the fourth inning Murphy drove
in the third Devils run with a to centerfield, scoring Pete LaRocco.
lou Tomasetti had scored earlier in the inning on an infield
error.
Felician (25-22, 13-7) erased the 3-0 deficit by rallying for
five runs after two were out in the bottom of the sixth inning. The
Golden Falcons loaded the bases and scored two runs before Mickey
Zudonyi hit a long drive that was misread by Sciences left fielder
Jeff
Murtha and fell for a bases-clearing triple, giving Felician
the lead for good, 5-3. The Golden Falcons tacked on three runs in
the seventh inning and one in the eighth. Greg Nealis
took the loss for the Devils, falling to 1-5 on the season. Murphy
went 3-for-4 with two RBI and LaRocco went 2-for-4 with a run
scored.
In the nightcap, it was Felician who jumped out to a 3-0 lead
scoring three times in the third inning. The Devils prevented
further damage on a strikeout-double play with LaRocco, who was
making just his third start at catcher, throwing out Marcos Torres
at second to end the inning.
The Devils rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning. Ryan
Challender doubled to start the inning and Michael
Croft, getting his first career start in left field, recorded
his first collegiate hit with a single, advancing Challender to
third. both runners moved up on a wild pitch with Challender
crossing the plate with the first Sciences run. Walks to Kyle Davis and
Mike
Gartland loaded the bases and Lou tomasetti followed with a
single to score Croft. Davis then scored on a sacrifice fly by
pitcher Dan
McMahon and Gartland cross the plate on Perry's single giving
the Devils a 4-3 lead.
Zudonyi tripled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and scored
the tying run when Torres was caught stealing on the back end of a
second strikeout-double play. The score remained tied at 4-4 until
the bottom of the ninth inning when Marcus McLeod tripled with one
out and Zudonyi hit a fly ball to right field which was dropped by
Challender and was scored as a sacrifice fly as McLeod came home to
score the winning run. Brandon
Boucher took the loss, finishing the season at 0-4.
The Devils finish the season with a 4-36 overall record and a
1-19 conference record.
