MERION STATION, Pa. -
Sophomore Alex Veronis reached the finals of the first singles flight at the 2010 Saint Joseph's Men's Tennis Invitational on Sunday morning as play concluded in the second annual event. Veronis eventually fell to Zach Katz of Penn in the final.
Veronis defeated Nikoloz Kurdadze of Drexel, 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinals before Katz took the title with a 6-7 (6), 6-2, 10-6 victory.
In the third flight, freshman Dan Barrus fell in the semifinals to UMBC's Mwalimu Phiri in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
All but two consolation matches were abandoned due to weather. In the first flight doubles consolation, Veronis and junior Paul Ganev were set to face juniors Peter Cognetti and Jeff Kessler before the match was washed out. The duos will complete the draw on campus when weather permits.
The men's squad is off until October 12, when they will face Delaware. The women's team will host its own Saint Joseph's Invitational next weekend.
