The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a tough loss to Detroit Mercy Thursday night at Finnesey Field. The Hawks scored a goal in each half, but it was not enough to match the offensive production of Detroit as SJU fell, 5-2
Michael Moulton (Newtown Pa./Notre Dame) posted five saves with a valiant effort in the loss. Nearly half of the first half went by without a goal until Sam Seppo of Detroit blasted a shot over the Moulton's head at 22:08.
Saint Joseph's rallied back with a rocket free kick from midfield, by Brendan Reilly (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) to make it 1-1.
Detroit regained a 2-1 lead with a goal by Tom Alott off a corner kick at 42:54.
In the second half, the Hawks had opportunities to capitalize, but Detroit struck first at 48:44, with a header by Cameron Roberts off of a throw in.
Hard work paid off for the Hawks when Tom Smart (Hatboro, Pa./La Salle) netted a goal from five yards out after Pat McGlynn (Jamison, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) fired a shot off the post to make it a 3-2 game
Detroit though bolstered their lead with a goal by Tevin Wynter at 52:14 and added another by Patrick Soltys at 64:43.
The Hawks return to action Sunday at Penn. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
