Tommy Gates and Max Montague were two-time winners on Saturday as the Saint Joseph's men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Saint Peter's. SJU earned the doubles point to take an early lead and secured the win with four singles triumphs.
Gates was a winner at number-two doubles with Dan Barrus as the pair took down Lucas Coutinho and Carlos Carrera, 9-8. He also defeated Coutinho in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the second-flight singles match.
Montague teamed up with Jeff Kessler to defeat Sebastian Barbero and Alex Frakes of Saint Peter's, 8-6, in the first doubles flight. He then defeated Nichollas Goulart de Lima, 6-1, 6-1, to take the fifth-flight singles match.
Also earning victories for the Hawks were Erik Thunberg, a 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 winner in a supertiebreak at fourth singles, and Kristian Broaddus, who took down Brian Ventura in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, in the sixth flight.
The Hawks will return home on Sunday for a match against perennial league power George Washington at the Riverside Racquet and Fitness Club at 4:00 p.m..
