MERION STATION, Pa. -
The Saint Joseph's field hockey team battled hard on Friday afternoon but ultimately fell to the visiting Ohio Bobcats, 2-0, at Ellen Ryan Field. Junior goalkeeper Kate Mitchell made eight saves in the game.
Mitchell was called on right away as Ohio (5-5) took possession on the opening whistle and Jessica Vaeth sent a shot in towards the cage that Mitchell turned away. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Taylor Brown found a loose ball at the top of the arc and sent a blast into the top half of the goal to give Ohio a 1-0 lead 43 seconds into the game.
The Hawk defense rallied, however, as Mitchell made four more saves in the first half while freshman Eva Gekas added a defensive save. The Bobcats were able to double the lead just before the final whistle of the half as Katherine Fenzel found the back of the cage on a scramble in front of the goal.
Saint Joseph's (2-8) had a prime opportunity right off the bat in the second half, but Ohio's Brittany Walker saved a shot off the stick of sophomore Jordan Martin to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
Mitchell finished with eight saves while Walker made two in the contest.
The Hawks now hit the road for a game at seventh-ranked Virginia on Sunday. Game time in Charlottesville is set for 1:00 p.m.
