Women's Soccer Tops George Mason, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman forward Emily Gingrich scored in the 76th minute and senior goalkeeper Lauren Jancuska made two saves as the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team downed George Mason, 1-0, Friday evening at Sweeney Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Hawks (7-7-3, 3-3-1 Atlantic 10) were the aggressors in the second half, pushing the ball into the Patriots' zone often.

Off a SJU throw in, the ball bounced around before Gingrich collected it at the top of the George mason box. Gaining control and clearing space, Gingrich lifted a shot to the upper right corner and past the GMU goalkeeper to put the Hawks up 1-0 at 75:38.

The SJU defense took control from there, holding the Patriots (7-9-1, 4-3 A-10) to no shots over the final 14 minutes to preserve the win.

For the game, Saint Joseph's outshot George Mason, 16-6, with Jancuska making two saves for the shutout victory. The win also moves SJU into tie for seventh in the A-10 standings.

The Hawks will cap the regular season Sunday against Dayton at 1 p.m. The SJU seniors will be honored prior to the start with a "Senior Day" ceremony.
