LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell to Rider, 3-1, on Tuesday evening. at Ben Cohen Field. With the loss, the Hawks stand at 0-1-1 after their first two early- season matches.
Tied 1-1 early in the 28th minute of action, Rider's Christian Flath dished a pass to Sonimi Halliday for the Broncs' second goal, off of the set piece. After an SJU yellow card in the 75th minute, Flath would convert his penalty kick for his second goal of the match to extend Rider's lead and eventual final score, 3-1.
Saint Joseph's found its first successful scoring opportunity in the 13th minute of action. Awarded their third corner kick of the game, the Hawks saw senior midfielder Jimmy Reilly launch the ball toward the middle of SJU's offense and Rider's defense. Sophomore midfielder Tim Lazorko gained possession of the ball and put it past Rider goalkeeper Jimmy Quilter to give the Hawks' the 1-0 advantage at the 12:47 mark. The goal marks Lazorko's first of the season and sixth of his career.
Rider (2-0) would answer back within the minute. After a Rider shot was blocked by a Hawk defender, the Broncs received a corner kick. Rider's Rob Nardiello found Warren Holmes for the equalizing goal at the 13:38 mark.
In the first half, Rider held offensive advantages in shots (9-6) and shots on goal (5-2).
The Hawks put together a string of shots on goal as junior forward Mike Glazer, Lazorko, and junior midfielder Jake Nelson fired off a trio of shots on goal in the 60th and 61st minutes but Rider's Quilter made the saves to keep the score 2-1 in favor of the Broncs.
For the game, Saint Joseph's held a 15-12 advantage in shots, outshooting the Broncs 9-3 in the second half. The Crimson and Gray also landed five of its seven shots on goal in the second half.
Lazorko and Nelson combined for five shots on goal in seven shot attempts while freshman defender Coupar Lipp made his collegiate debut as he checked in 24:50 into the first half.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Andrew D'Ottavi (0-1-1) made four saves, with three coming in the first half, in a full 90:00.
