Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell to Rhode Island, 2-0, in Atlantic 10 action on Sunday afternoon on Sweeney Field. With the loss, the Hawks stand at 6-5-4 overall and 1-3-1 in the A-10.
The Hawks were forced to play a man down for a majority of the match after a red card was charged to sophomore forward Mori Diane early in the 28th minute.
"It was a disappointing match," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "We were actually putting a lot of pressure on 0-0. The red card changed the game . . . I thought our guys worked pretty hard, but we need to win our next three. We go away on the road to St. Bonaventure, and every game we've been in a position to win the game and we just haven't gotten it done. So our backs are against the wall. We have to see what our guys are made of, and we have to focus on just getting that first win to put us at two wins in the conference, and we'll see where it goes."
Both of Rhode Island's (10-3-3, 6-0-0 A-10) goals came off of free kick opportunities. In the 44th minute, Ryan Oakley launched a free kick into that box that found the head of Wesley Matthews, who tucked it away into the left side of the net. In the 66th minute, Matt Sykes scored on a free kick from 20 yards out.
Saint Joseph's owned a commanding 26-11 advantage in shots, including 14 in the first half, but a smaller 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Senior forward Mike Glazer fired off a career-high eight shots, while junior defender Tim Lazorko added five.
The Hawks also earned four of the match's five corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Bobby Edwards (4-4-4, 1-3-1 A-10) made three saves in a full-match effort.
The Hawks return to action at St. Bonaventure next Sunday, November 2. Kickoff at the Marra Athletics Complex in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saint Joseph's will then return home the following Thursday and Sunday to close out the 2014 regular season.
MATCH NOTES: Freshman midfielder Mike Akinkoye made his first collegiate start in place of sophomore Sam Irvin, who was not eligible for the contest due to yellow card accumulation.
