KINGSTON, R.I. - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime decision at Rhode Island on Friday evening in both teams Atlantic 10 opening match.
After a scoreless 90 minutes of play, the Rams (9-1-1) scored the lone goal of the game as Samantha Leyh headed in a pass from teammate Ari Stanton at 94:23.
In regulation time, both teams nearly matched each other shot-for-shot in the defensive battle as each team registered nine shots apiece, with SJU holding a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
Individually, sophomore Emily Gingrich had a team-high three shots for SJU, while junior goalkeeper Allison Ebling made five saves in the tough-fought loss.
The Hawks (7-5-0) return to action on Sunday at Massachusetts at 1 p.m.
