Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Army's Mario Da Silva scored in the 58th minute as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team (1-1-0) fell to the Black Knights of Army (1-1-0) by a final score of 1-0 on Monday evening on Sweeney Field.
"Tonight was a difficult loss," said D'Ambra following the match. "Army started the game with a lot of intensity. Our guys lacked a little bit of confidence to start. Army dictated the pace of the game. Luckily we were able to get out of the first half 0-0, and we regrouped at halftime."
Junior midfielder Tim Lazorko and junior forward Emmanuel Temeh led the way offensively with three shots apiece, landing one on goal each. In he 48th minute, Lazorko received a brilliant pass from senior forward Mike Glazer but fired his shot off of the right goal post to narrowly miss the tally.
Temeh then landed a shot on goal in the 59th minute, but Army goalkeeper Winston Boldt made the save to keep the Black Knights ahead.
Sophomore midfielder Eric Jordan made a solid run on goal in the 86th minute but was whistled offside, the third offside call that the Hawks were whistled for on the day.
"It was a very competitive match in the second half. Army was a little bit more efficient in the offensive end and ended up breaking us down. It was a well-fought, evenly-played match in the second half. I'm proud of our guys for responding and battling. We still need to make some improvements and find ways to get better after a match like this, particularly in the attacking side, to get better as a group and a team."
Senior Jake Nelson made a pair of similar defensive plays, once in each half, in getting his head on Army cross attempts to push the ball out of the danger zone for the Hakws and back upfield.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jay Higbee (1-1-0) made five saves in a full-game effort.
Army owned a 6-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but Higbee made both saves on shots that came his way to keep the Hawks scoreless heading into the halftime break. Lazorko and Temeh recorded a shot apiece for the Crimson and Gray. Army also held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks while SJU was whistled for 9 of the first half's 15 fouls.
For the game, Army owned a 16-7 advantage in shots and 5-0 edge in corner kicks. In a very physical matchup that saw a total of 35 fouls, eight players were tagged with yellow cards, five of which were Hawks.
