PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team blanked Rhode Island, 2-0, Thursday evening at Sweeney Field. Behind the third shutout of the year by senior goalkeeper Allison Ebling and goals from Hannah Racis and Shannon Mulvey, the Hawks improved to 7-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Atlantic 10.
After a scoreless first half that saw SJU outshoot Rhode Island 18-1, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute as Racis tallied her fourth goal of the season. With the ball deep down the left sideline of Rhode Island, SJU senior Shannon Westhead crossed a pass into the box where freshman Dakota Mills headed a pass to a wide open Racis on the right side. Gathering the pass, Racis delivered a shot to lower left corner and past the goalkeeper to give her team a one-goal lead at 57:43.
Saint Joseph's added to its lead in the 73rd minute on a header by Mulvey off a free kick. Playing the ball from the left wing, junior Emily Gingrich played the ball into the middle of the box where Mulvey elevated and headed the ball into an open side of the net at 72:07 to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hawks.
In goal, Ebling made a pair of saves for her fifth win on the year.
For the game, SJU posted 28 shots to Rhode Island's four.
The Hawks return to action this Sunday when they host La Salle at 1 p.m.
