Newkirk's Jumper Lifts Men's Basketball Over Old Dominion, 66-64

Shavar Newkirk hit a short jumper with one second remaining to lift Saint Joseph's (4-1) to a 66-64 win over Old Dominion (3-2) in the consolation game of the 2015 Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Isaiah Miles scored a game-high 18 points for the Hawks while DeAndre' Bembry added 15, with 11 in the second half. Bembry also had 10 rebounds, three assists and four blocks for his first double-double of the year, while Newkirk scored 10 in the win.

With the game tied at 64-64, the Hawks had the ball at 8.9 seconds. Bembry inbounded it and Newkirk eventually pulled up for the winning jumper.

SJU took its first lead of the half, 54-53, on a pair of free throws by Pierfrancesco Oliva at 4:51 and increased it to 56-53 with a steal and layup by James Demery. There would be three ties in the final 4:51, and Old Dominion regained the lead once, 59-58, with 2:32 to play.

But Newkirk answered with a putback on a breakway to give SJU a 60-59 lead with 1:45 to play. The Monarchs tied it at 60-60, but SJU connected on 4-of-6 free throws, led by a pair from Aaron Brown, after he grabbed a defensive rebound on ODU's possession with 35 seconds left.

Two free throws by Aaron Bacote at :14 tied the score for the last time, 64-64, setting the stage for Newkirk's shot.

ODU led by as many as six points in the second half, but Bembry scored 8 of the Hawks' 10 points in a stretch that kept them within 51-48 with under eight minutes to play.

The Hawks went scoreless for over three minutes in the first half, allowing ODU to take a 21-15 lead until Bembry hit a pair of free throws at 7:00. Bembry and Miles combined for nine points in a stretch that brought the Hawks back within 26-24 but ODU held a 31-30 halftime lead.

The Hawks get a break for the holiday before hosting Big 5 rival Villanova on December 1.
