Men's Basketball Falls At Dayton, 68-64

DAYTON, Ohio - Saint Joseph's got a combined 46 points from sophomore DeAndre' Bembry and junior Isaiah Miles, but it wasn't enough for the Hawks as they fell at Dayton, 68-64, Thursday evening at UD Arena.

Down four with under a minute to play, Bembry came up with a steal and fast break layup to bring the Hawks within two, 65-63, with 50.2 seconds to go.

On the ensuing possession, the Flyers turned the ball over as SJU's Miles drew a charge, giving the ball back to the Hawks with 42.2 seconds to play.

Using up the shot clock, Bembry drew a foul with 26 seconds left. He would hit the first free throw, but missed the second as Dayton grabbed the rebound and clung to a 65-64 edge.

Saint Joseph's (11-14, 5-8 Atlantic 10) fouled immediately and got a break as Jordan Sibert made just one of two free throws, giving the Hawks the ball back and down only two, 66-64.

Out of a Dayton timeout, Saint Joseph's Bembry worked the ball down the left side of the lane, but was forced into a turnover with 4.5 seconds left.

Dyshawn Pierre would seal the win for the Flyers with a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds on the clock.

Both teams were hot from three-point range in the first half, with the Hawks hitting 7-of-12 and Dayton converting 7-of-13.  Miles had a team-high 14 points, making 4-of-6 threes.

The teams would tie the score three more times and with Dayton leading 36-33, Shavar Newkirk banked in three-pointer from way beyond the arc at the buzzer, to knot the score at halftime, 36-36.

Starting the second half on a 13-4 run, Dayton opened a 49-40 lead just over six minutes into the period.

Saint Joseph's answered back with a 12-0 run to take a 52-49 edge on Miles' jumper at 10:44. Bembry and Miles combined for all 12 of SJU's points, while the Hawks' defense held Dayton to 0-for-4 from the field over that stretch.

Dayton would tie it at 55-55 from the foul line, but Miles gave the Hawks a 58-55 lead at 5:50 with his fifth three-pointer of the night.

The Hawks held Dayton without a field goal for nine minutes, but Pierre broke that string with a three-pointer at 3:35 to tie the score, 58-58. Kendall Pollard restored the lead to the Flyers with a free throw, 59-58 and Sibert connected on a three-pointer at 2:20 to stretch UD's lead to 62-58.

Aaron Brown answered for the Hawks with a three-point play at 1:47 to pull SJU within 62-61.

Pollard followed with a three-point play of his own to push UD ahead 65-61 at 1:14 leading to the frantic final minute.

As a team, the Hawks hit 24-of-50 from the floor, 9-of-19 from three-point range (47.4 percent),  5-of-10 from the foul line and out rebounded the Flyers 32-28.
