Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore midfielder Sarah Smith scored the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse program's first ever goal against Penn, but the Hawks ultimately fell to the 13th-ranked Quakers, 13-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Franklin Field.

Penn (5-0) got on the scoreboard first on Lindsey Smith's score from Nina Corcoran, who would finish the day with a game-high five assists.

SJU's lone scoring drive of the game began and ended with Smith. Smith picked off a Penn clear attempt at the midfield and scooped up the ground ball for the Crimson and Gray. Following a pair of Penn fouls, Smith dodged her defender to her left and fired her shot into the right side of the net to even the score, 1-1. The score marked SJU's first in program history against Penn.

Unfortunately, the Quakers exploded on a 12-0 run that would span the rest of the game to hand SJU its first road loss of the season.

The Quakers were sparked by a 34-9 edge in shots, including a 20-2 second half. Penn also held the edge in ground balls (23-14), and draw controls (11-5) and forced 23 SJU turnovers, with 11 coming in the form of failed clear attempts.

Individually, Smith and junior midfielder Kelly Phelan led the way with three shots apiece while junior defenders Caroline Hagan, who scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Courtney Emanuele, who recorded three ground balls and caused turnovers apiece, combined for seven of SJU's 14 ground balls and five of SJU's eight caused turnovers on the afternoon.

Saint Joseph's senior goalkeeper Nora McGeever (3-2) finished the game with 13 saves, including 10 in the second half, in the full 60:00. McGeever also matched a team-best four ground balls on the day.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Saturday, March 14 at Monmouth. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in West Long Branch, N.J.

GAME NOTES: Sophomore defender Becky Daub made her first start of the season on the back line.
