PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Dakota Mills scored twice and head coach Jess Mannella picked up her 100th win on Hawk Hill as the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team topped buffalo, 3-1, Friday evening at Sweeney Field.
The Hawks (1-0-0) got on the board early Mills wasted little time making a first impression. Off a pass from senior Morgan Michon, the rookie Mills placed a shot from the right side of the box over the UB goalkeeper Laura Dougal's head and into the far netting just 22 seconds into the game to give SJU a 1-0 advantage.
Saint Joseph's extended its lead to 2-0 in 23rd minute as senior Shannon Westhead converted a crossing pass from junior Emily Gingrich. With the ball on the right wing, Gingrich arched a ball to the far left corner, allowing Westhead to run under it and deposit it into the back of the net at 22:46.
Buffalo's Jackie Hall got her team on the board at 72:52 as she headed home a corner kick by teammate Moira Petrie to make it 2-1.
Mills gave the Hawks a two-goal lead less than a minute later though. Off a pass from junior Shannon Mulvey, Mills snuck a shot from the right side of the box past the challenging Dougal to make it 3-1 at 73:35.
The Hawks kept Buffalo off the board from there as Mannella picked up her 100th win at Saint Joseph's. Now in her 15th season, Mannella has posted a 100-134-30 record with the Hawks and is 110-143-31 for her career.
For the game, Saint Joseph's finished with a 16-8 edge in shots, while Buffalo (0-1-0) held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal, Allison Ebling picked up the victory as she made three saves on the night.
The Hawks return to action next Friday at northeastern at 6 p.m.
