BOSTON - In a matchup of two of the top teams in the NSCAA's Mid-Atlantic region, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team went to overtime with host Northeastern Friday evening. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the host Huskies tallied a goal in the 92nd minute for the 2-1 win.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Saint Joseph's responded early into the second half as junior midfielder Emily Gingrich tallied her first goal of the season. With the ball at the top of the left side of the box, Gingrich drilled a shot to the opposite corner and past the Northeastern goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1 at 46:21.
Neither team would score during the remainder of regulation as the game stayed tied at 1-1 heading into overtime.
The Huskies (2-1-0) tallied the decisive goal early into extra time as Mackenzie Dowd headed in the game winner from the middle of the box at 91:55 to give host Northeastern the victory.
For the game, Saint Joseph's (1-1-0) finished with eight shots, while rookie goalkeeper Grace Bendon had a game-high six saves for the Hawks in her collegiate debut.
Northeastern, which opened the scoring in the fifth minute courtesy of a Kayla Cappuzzo goal, finished with 12 shots total and had eight corner kicks to SJU's one.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday at Sacred Heart at 1 p.m.
