FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Junior midfielder Emily Gingrich scored twice as she helped lead the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team past Sacred Heart, 4-2, Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks (2-1-0) took a 1-0 lead early as rookie Michaela Finneyfrock tallied her first collegiate goal. Off a corner kick by freshman Paige Bergman, classmate Taylor Ryan collected the ball and found Finneyfrock inside the box for the tap-in goal at 19:08.
Gingrich pushed SJU's lead to 2-0 at 24:50 as she scored off a pass from Ryan.
The Pioneers (1-2-0) cut into the Hawks' lead with a goal at 53:36 as Alex Mesropyan scored on a free kick from 23 yards out.
Saint Joseph's regained its two-goal lead in the 61st minute as Gingrich tallied her second goal of the game. Off a leading pass from Hannah Racis, Gingrich took the ball and dribbled past the Sacred Heart goalkeeper and drilled a shot into the open net at 60:30 to push the lead to 3-1.
Racis would up the Hawks' lead to 4-1 at 66:10 as she headed in a corner kick by Bergman for her first collegiate goal.
Lindsay Corallo brought the Pioneers to within tow, 4-2, with a goal at 75:03, but senior goalkeeper Allison Ebling and Saint Joseph's defense kept Sacred Heart off the board from there to preserve the win.
For the game, Sacred Heart out shot SJU 15-10, with both teams collecting three corner kicks apiece.
Ebling, who improved to 2-0-0 on the season with the win, made a game-high five saves.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Sunday, September 6, versus Rider at 1 p.m. at Sweeney Field.
