PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team got goals from Shannon Westhead, Janine Mueller and Dakota Mills, while goalkeeper Grace Bendon and the Hawks' defense kept Rider in check as SJU downed the Broncs, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Westhead opened the scoring for the Hawks in the 11th minute as she tallied her second goal of the season. With the ball in the middle of the Rider box, Westhead gathered the ball and drilled a shot past the goalkeeper and into the upper right corner of the goal at 10:14.
Mueller extended the Hawks lead to 2-0 at 74:12 as her shot from the top of the box to the lower right corner took a funny bounce and slipped past the waiting Rider goalkeeper. Senior Erica Graziosi was credited with the assist after centering the ball to Mueller.
Saint Joseph's added another insurance goal at 81:21 as Mills tallied her third goal of the season. Off a Lauren Dimes pass to the right side of the box, Mills found herself one-on-one versus the Rider goalkeeper and placed a shot that found the back of the net on the left side.
The three goal lead was plenty for Bendon and the SJU defense as the rookie keeper earned her first collegiate win, posting a pair of saves in the shutout victory.
As a team, the Hawks (3-1-0) outshot Rider 19-6 and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Friday at Seton Hall at 7 p.m.
