Men's Soccer Heads to VCU for Key Atlantic 10 Match-Up

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad (6-7-1, 3-2-0 A-10) will play its second straight road match when the Hawks face VCU (4-6-3, 2-1-1 A-10) this Wednesday, October 19. Start time at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va. is slated for 7:00 p.m. Live streaming of the match will be provided via the Atlantic 10 Network.

With nine points, Saint Joseph's ranks second in the A-10 behind Saint Louis (4-0 A-10), while VCU sits in a four-way tie for fourth with seven points. The Atlantic 10 Championship runs from November 10-13 at Davidson's Alumni Soccer Stadium. Eight teams make the postseason tournament. Saint Joseph's was predicted to finish 11th in the A-10 regular-season, per the 2016 A-10 Men's Soccer Preseason Poll. VCU was voted third while receiving two first-place votes.

The Hawks have dropped their last two matches by a combined score of 5-1, while VCU is coming in off of a 1-0 overtime loss to Duquesne; prior to that match, the Rams had either won or tied in their last six contests. SJU's defensive unit that has posted five clean sheets on the year will go up against a VCU offense that leads the Atlantic 10 with 16.25 shots per game.

Saint Joseph's junior midfielder Matt Crawford leads the squad in scoring with 17 points on a team-best seven goals and team-best three assists. In conference matches, Crawford ranks second in the A-10 in total points (10) and third in points per game (2.00) and ties for second in total goals (4). Senior forward Mori Diane and sophomore forwards Isaac Agyapong and Derek MacKinnon have added two goals apiece, with Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week Agyapong netting SJU's first goal in program history against Davidson last Wednesday.

Junior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell (6-7-1, 3-2-0 A-10) sports a 1.19 goals against average and .757 save percentage in all 1290:44. Through 14 starts, O'Connell has made 53 saves against just 17 goals allowed to go with five shutouts.

VCU enters Wednesday's match coming off of a 1-0 overtime loss, on a penalty kick, at Duquesne on Saturday. 2016 Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team forward Jorge Gerranz (4g, 6a), Luc Fatton (5g), and 2016 Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team midfielder Rafael Andrade Santos (3g, 2a) lead the Rams in scoring while Pierre Gardan (4-6-3, 2-1-1 A-10) owns a 1.47 goals against average and .688 save percentage in 1222:28, all but 33:57, to go with three shutouts.

In A-10 play, the Rams opened the season with a 1-1 draw at Saint Louis, defeated George Mason, 2-0, tied with George Washington, 2-2, defeated LaSalle, 2-0, and most recently fell at Duquesne.

The Hawks own a 1-0 all-time series edges over the Rams after defeating then-#25/24 VCU on Senior Day of 2013, when former Hawk forward Ryan McFadden '13 put away the match-winner late in the second half.
