Men's Tennis Blasts Past Delaware, 7-0

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team benefited from an outstanding group effort on Sunday afternoon, winning the top two doubles flights and sweeping all six singles flights en route to a 7-0 drubbing of Delaware at Dupont Country Club. Five of the six singles victories came in straight sets.

“It was a very good, solid contest, with our match play experiences starting to pay off,” said head coach Ian Crookenden, whose charges were playing their third match in as many days. “All of our players played hard; some were a little weary, but we pulled out a very solid win.”

Junior Kyle Chalmers and sophomore Peter Dewitt got things started for the Hawks, earning a 6-0 sweep in the first doubles flight. After a Blue Hen victory in the third, senior Kevin Gates and junior Tristan Boustany finished off a 6-4 win in the second to secure the point.

Chalmers, Dewitt, and Gates won their singles flights as well; Chalmers came away with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the second, while Dewitt was a 6-3, 6-1 winner in the fifth. Gates battled back from a set down in the fourth and ultimately emerged with a 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) win.

Meanwhile, senior Andres Urrea earned a 6-4, 6-4 win in the first flight while freshmen Andre Fick and Dan Tan were 6-4, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-2 winners in the third and sixth flights, respectively.

Saint Joseph's improved to 4-3 on the season and returns to action on Saturday at Lehigh. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
